Originally I simply used my first name, Sander, or my initials, SR,
when playing games, but in January of 1996 I downloaded the shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D
.
I then decided my given name didn't fit the game, and wanted to use something else.
I liked the sound of the name of one of the game's weapons, the Devastator.
I figured I wouldn't be alone if I simply picked that, so I came up with the similar sounding Detonator. Because detonators blow up along with the explosion they start, it added a little self-critique missing from a completely serious name. Later I realised it also fits my (sometimes) preference of being the instigator of changes, not the actual changer. Being relatively new to the internet I still thought 1337-speak was interesting, so I spelled it Deton8or instead.
Probably not that much later I figured I'd try out IRC, and installed a copy of mIRC. After a while I thought the name sounded a bit too aggressive for chatting. I think I read a piece of text about Sherlock Holmes using an anagram of his name as a pseudonym, which inspired me to do the same. Looking at a piece of paper with my options I decided I liked the jumble Retodon8 the best. It sounded more or less like a word, it's not a wannabe nick, and it's pretty much unique as well. Over time I used it in games as well, and from there on it simply stuck as my online name everywhere.
Although astrology seems pretty arbitrary to be, my Zodiac sign, Aries ♈, is the original reason for me to use the sheep avatar. My Chinese Sign, the Sheep/Goat 羊 being the same animal made it seem more appropriate. Sheep aren't animals thought of as cool by most people, meaning as an avatar it wouldn't be used that often. After noticing for instance Warhammer's Verminlords and thinking about the two astrology Signs, I realised two sets or horns made sense. With an anthropomorphic shape it also makes the sheep resemble the image of the Horned God, making it more recognizable.
The legs are artiodactylous, remaining true to the sheep theme. For the sake of efficaciousness the hands are not. They are tetradactylous, in a zygodactyly configuration, because I like that look and because it's more unique, and it also refers to the 8 in the name.
The avatar is skeletal firstly because I sort of like the aesthetics of skeletons. I've never been fat, and I'm not exactly muscular either, so it's more suitable than those two stereotypes. It's also the flesh that complicate things, adds emotions, so stripping that gives a nice, simpler result. I removed the biological aspect completely by making the bones mineral, and making the horns and hoofs a dark metal. There's also the reference to the Grim Reaper, an interesting character. Depending on the context the avatar features other dark metal augmentations, somewhat similar to Giger's art. They are sometimes arachnid in appearance, which makes sense in that my mother is a Scorpius, and my father's Sign, the Capricorn is already represented.
My favourite colour is blue, so I added that to the avatar in the form of armour, which felt like it needed to be stone. This blue ground is also the matrix that the pieces that make up the avatar come from.
